Meghann
Michalsky
“ReAWaken is a work of tremendous force and impact. Three women in a state of high distress — their bodies shuttering and erupting — inhabit a shattered, smokey space saturated with red light. The dancers are ferocious, and spectacular. The choreography carries the distinctive signature of an uncompromising creator.”
“I had the privilege of seeing the magical tour de force of Meghann Michalsky’s ‘ReAwaken’ at the Dance Made in Canada Festival, August 2023. This dance creation left a lasting impression. I have seen many dance choreographies over the course of my career in contemporary dance and compare ReAwaken to the best. Directly after viewing the performance my colleagues and I commented that the depth of her work was astounding!
One does not see a choreographer of this exceptional ability come along very often. I wish Meghann all the best in her career and look forward to seeing her genius grow and flourish.”
“I was immediately struck by their technical sophistication and obvious commitment to dance as art and craft. The piece is viscerally aggressive to the edge of pugnacious. Semchuck and Michalsky were physically and technically so well equated and on point, in choreography that pushes at the outer limits of highly combative partnering.”
“Michalsky’s choreography is like 1930s Martha Graham on electronica steroids.”
“ I only curate highly trained and physical dance works and your work fall into that category.”
“If I could only use one word to describe Deep END, Michalsky’s piece, it would be “unleashed.” Michalsky fearlessly asks her dancers to surrender to the dark, hypnotic auar that subsumes the stage. Like an expert glassblower, Michalsky crafts ornate kinetic sculptures from raw, molten materials. Energy and vivaciousness spew from the five dancers’ bodies, especially in the heavily rhythmic sections set to rock music. Every so often, the dancers retreat into a defensive embrace, providing an evocative counterpoint to the physical intensity that characterizes the work.”
“Both Michalsky and Moquin are boldly venturing to make waves in the prairie region with a passion for seeing contemporary dance thrive in Calgary.”
“Meghann Michalsky BA’14, received the RBC Emerging Artist award for her incredible level of artistic output, her impressive motivation for growth and change, and her determined and productive investment in the Calgary community”
"I dance to show you what I see, what I hear, what is Me, in the space co-occupied; and as I move, I strive, I try, to clarify. My body moves to embody thought, about what is true and what is not. I move in ways distinct to me, producing work idiosyncratically driven by the themes that fire my pulse; by unfolding social themes that sear my heart, that unite us all, that drive us apart. A moving body tells a tale, the tongue cannot communicate; it touches us within, without, binds and enlightens, without doubt."
